Where Do Municipal Bond Investors Live?

The following “heatmaps” show how much tax-exempt interest was claimed by individual taxpayers in each US Congressional district in 2022. Tax-exempt interest is a proxy for investment in tax-exempt municipal bonds.

* These maps are based on Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) analysis of Internal Revenue Service Statistics of Income (SOI) data, and ICE geospatial data
* Tax-exempt income is expressed as a percent of the Congressional district’s total adjusted gross income.
* To see the Congressional district number and the amount of interest claimed, simply hover the pointer on the map. You can also shift the map, and zoom in and out to see district boundaries in more detail.
* The top map shows tax-exempt interest as a percent of adjusted gross income for all taxpayers.
* The bottom map shows tax-exempt interest claimed only by taxpayers with adjusted gross income of less than $500,000, expressed as a percent of the Congressional district’s total adjusted gross income. This map is designed to show investment in tax-exempt municipal bonds by investors outside the top federal income tax bracket.
* Congressional District boundaries are based on the 117th Congress.
